This is a great entry-level system for SMBs and offers many of the same features found in the more advanced ProLiant Gen9 servers. With the HPE DL80 Gen9, Administrators can start out with just one processor and quickly scale to support two processors, and more memory as business needs change. Choose from either an 8 or 12-bay LFF drive bay chassis. Offering substantial storage, this system is a perfect fit for running storage-intensive applications like backup and cold storage. It’s also an excellent platform for running common IT infrastructure workloads.
Performance
The ProLiant DL80 Gen9 features the Intel C610 chipset and supports one or two Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3 or E5-2600 v4 processors with 4 to 14 cores, and 2.5MB cache per core. Power is provided by either a 550W or 900W PSU with options for redundant and non-redundant power configurations.
Memory
High-speed DDR4 memory is supported in up to eight DIMM slots on the Gen9 DL80 in a two processor configuration. With a single processor, only 4 DIMM slots are available. Using 32GB memory modules with two CPUs, the system will support up to 256GB of memory and speeds of up to 2400MHz using HPE SmartMemory. Both registered (RDIMM) and load-reduced (LRDIMM) modes are supported but cannot be mixed.
Storage
Using 12 8TB hot-plug SAS LFF drives in a 12-bay chassis will provide an impressive 96TB of storage. Optical drives are not supported on either DL80 G9 chassis configuration. Entry models are equipped with an integrated HPE Dynamic Smart Array B140i Controller that can support up to 10 x SATA HDs at 6Gb/s and RAID configurations of 0, 1, and 5. Additional controllers are supported, including the HPE H240 FIO Smart Host Bus Adapter and the Smart Array P440.
Network
The system comes standard with 2x 1GbE. There’s also an optional FlexibleLOM slot that can support either 1GbE, 10GbE, or Quad Data Rate (QDR) and Fourteen Data Rate (FDR) with an InfinBand networking option.
Expansion
Up to seven PCIe 3.0 expansion slots are available in a two processor configuration. Various PCIe risers can be installed to support optional components like a single-width GPU, additional NICs or storage controllers. The HPE DL80 Gen9 has an integrated Matrox G200eH2 for graphics support.
Management
Like all of HPE’s Gen9 servers the ProLiant DL80 G9 comes with HPE’s iLO management module, which can be accessed from a shared 1Gb I/O port. iLO helps manage the system and provides remote power management. For more advanced management features like power capping, advanced power monitoring, and OS remote control, you’ll need the Advanced license.
Summary
HPE’s DL80 Gen9 server offers excellent scalability for SMBs that don’t initially require a great deal of compute or storage. As business demands increase, the system can scale with the addition of a second CPU, more memory modules and storage devices. Built-in management tools also help to mitigate costs and ensure maximum uptime.

Expandability, performance, reliability, and easy to use management tools make the HPE ProLiant DL180 Gen9 server a cost effective option to suit any size business. Utilizing the new Xeon E5-2600 processor family, an abundance of memory, and a variety of storage options, the HPE DL180 Gen9 is ideal for running business applications such as Hadoop, Cloud-based SaaS, and mobile applications.
Performance
A maximum of two Intel E5-2600 v3 or E5-2600 v4 processors are supported with 4 to 18 cores each, and offer speeds of up to 2400MT/s. With two top of the line 18-core v4 processors installed that’s 36 cores total and 72 threads.
Memory
Both Registered (RDIMM) and Load Reduced (LRDIMM), DDR4 memory modules are supported on this system. HPE’s DDR4 SmartMemory modules deliver up to 50% more bandwidth than DDR3 modules while reducing power consumption by up to 40%. 16 DIMM slots total, with eight slots per processor, are available in a two-processor configuration and provide up to 512GB using 16 x 32GB RDIMM modules. For more performance, LRDIMMs will provide up to 1TB of memory. Both RDIMMs and LRDIMMs support transfer speeds of up to 2400 MT/s but for performance applications LRDIMM modules are recommended.
Storage
Administrators can choose between chassis configurations supporting either 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch SATA or SAS HDDs, and SSDs. A 12-bay LFF drive bay configurations supports maximum storage of 120TB using 12 x 10TB SAS or SATA HDDs. Several other drive configurations are available depending on your performance and storage needs. Optional M.2 and Dual Micro SD cards offer super-fast OS and Hypervisor boot support. Refer to the specifications for more information on storage options.
Expansion
Up to 6 PCIe 3.0 slots are available on the HPE ProLiant DL180 Gen9 in a two processor configuration using two risers. Three different riser options support a range of expansion cards and additional external devices such as optional GPUs, networking cards to increase bandwidth and performance, and external and internal storage controllers. The secondary riser board is only supported with two processors. An integrated Matrox G200eH2 graphics processor is embedded on the system board but additional Nvidia GPUs are supported including Nvidia’s Quadro K2200 or K4200 graphics accelerator cards. Incorporating two GPU cards requires a two-processor configuration.
Management
HPE offers several different management tools to provide better server maintenance and reduce critical downtime. HPE’s Integrated Lights Out (iLO) comes standard on this system. iLO gives administrators access to server health information and the ability to monitor and set server power and thermal controls on-site or remotely. Optional enterprise licenses can be purchased giving administrators even more management tools. An iLO Essentials license grants SMBs server set up via virtual media, full remote management access through the Integrated Remote Console, and faster time to resolution with proactive email notifications. The iLO Advanced license, for Enterprise businesses, grants premium remote functionality such as graphic remote console with multi-user collaboration, video record/playback, and many more advanced features. iLO makes managing your server easier than ever before.
