Description
The HPE ProLiant DL560 is the first quad-socket server in HPE’s eighth generation server. The FlexibleLOM (LAN on motherboard) networking ports can support 1GbE and 10GbE, as well as QDR/FDR InfiBand connectivity. Using Intel’s power-sipping Xeon E5-4600 series processors, also provide Administrators with a more cost effective alternative than using Intel Xeon E7 processors.
Performance
A maximum of four Intel E5-4600 or E5-4600 v2 processors can be installed on the HPE DL560 Gen8. All eight variants of the Xeon E5-4600 processors are supported, including 95W, 115W, and 140W processors, which come with four, six, or eight cores. Intel’s E5-2600 v2 processors offer a 50% increase in cores and cache than the previous generation Xeon processors and reduces virtualization overhead to a mere 4% of CPU utilization by eliminating up to 50% of virtual machine exits.
Memory
With a four processor configuration, this system can support 48 DIMM sockets for an impressive maximum memory capacity of 1.5TB using 32GB LRDIMM memory modules. Flat cabling throughout the Gen8 servers, enhances overall cooling and makes access to the DIMM modules easier. HPE’s DDR3 SmartMemory modules, consume 20% less power than standard memory modules along with an increase in performance. SmartMemory modules also provide protection against failing DIMMs and data loss with HPE’s Online Spare memory technology.
Storage
This system can support up to 5 SFF SAS hot plug drive bays for a maximum internal storage of 6TB using 1.2TB drives. The system includes a Smart Array P420i RAID controller with an option for 512MB Flash Backed Write Cache (FBWC). This Smart Array provides up to six times better SSD performance than the P410i controller used in the ProLiant Gen7 servers. HPE’s new SmartDrive carriers feature an intuitive icon-based display to minimize human error when checking hard drive status.
Expansion
The DL560 Gen8’s design leaves plenty of room for expansion. The system can support a maximum of two PCIe risers with three slots each for a total of 6 PCIe expansion slots when both processors are installed. With a dual-processor configuration, users can choose between a three-slotted and a two-slotted riser card expansion. Using a second riser card gives users the option to add a maximum of three GPU coprocessors. Five of the six slots support PCIe Gen3, and the last slot supports PCIe 2.0 technology. Integrated graphics are handled by a Matrox G200 chip.
Management
Remote management is provided through HPE’s iLO Management Engine, standard on all HPE Gen8 servers. Agentless alerting capabilities and hardware monitoring are built into the server with HPE’s Agentless Management which starts working the second the power cord and the Ethernet cable are connected. 24×7 continuous health monitoring is provided through HPE Active Health System. For converged infrastructures, Administrators can implement additional tools for managing the network, like HPE’s Insight Cluster management.
Summary
The HPE ProLiant DL560 Gen8 server offers impressive memory capacity, reduced energy costs, and support for up to four processors. The system is easy to upgrade and service with a customer-inspired design and enhanced configuration flexibility. Server management features are accessible from a single screen making server management easier than previous ProLiant servers. The use of flat cabling and the retractable Systems Insight Display (SID) saves space throughout the system, further adding to the system’s simplicity for stress-free upgrades and serviceability.
