The HPE ProLiant DL980 Gen7 server is a scale-up x86 system that supports four or eight processors, 128 DIMM slots, and 7.2TB of internal storage. HPE’s PREMA Architecture combines Smart CPU Caching technology and a redundant system fabric to interconnect the system and reduce communication overhead. This system simplifies server management with the ability to consolidate 197 servers onto a single console. Expansion potential is impressive with 50% more I/O slots than previous generation, and HPE’s iLO 3.0 software provides remote management capabilities eight times faster than its predecessor.
Performance
This system features Intel’s 7500 chipset, which supports four or eight E7-2800 or E7-4800 processors, which can provide up to 30MB Level 3 cache memory per socket and speeds up to 2.26GHz depending on the model. HPE’s Smart CPU Caching technology reduces memory and I/O latency by minimizing inter-processor communication for faster transaction time. For enhanced networking performance, this system can be upgraded to include a 10-GbE networking port designed with an eight lane (x8) PCIe bus.
Memory
Using DDR3 load reduced (LRDIMM) 32GB memory modules in all 128 DIMM slots the system will support a maximum memory capacity of 4TB. Double Device Data Correction (DDDC) technology provides recovery from two consecutive DRAM failures on the memory DIMMs to improve system reliability by a factor of ten compared to systems using Single Device Data Correction (SDDC).
Storage
The HPE DL980 Gen7 can support up to eight SFF SAS HDD or SSD drives for a maximum internal storage capacity of 7.2TB. Unlike the SmartArray P410 storage controller, the Smart Array P410i storage controller has a dedicated slot and comes with an optional Flash-Backed Write Cache (FBWC), standard on four processor configurations.
Expansion
Up to 16 expansion slots are supported on this system. 11 full length/full height slots and five low profile slots. Five full height/full length I/O slots come standard on this system but Administrators can add an optional mezzanine riser board for an additional five or six full height/full length slots. For even greater expansion potential, a second mezzanine board will provide five extra low profile slots. I/O slots support PCIe 2.0 technology, but the system can be configured with an I/O expander that includes a mixture of both PCIe 2.0 and PCI-X technologies. Graphics are provided by an embedded ATI ES1000 with 16M color depth and 1280 x 1024 resolution.
Management
HPE’s iLO 3.0 reduces power cost by accurately measuring power consumption on actual usage, rather than rough estimates, and allows administrators to regulate power usage on a per workload basis. HPE’s Insight Control automates and reduces data center tasks up to 40% and features disaster recovery capabilities that allow application environments to be reactivated with the touch of a button.
