Description
With the half width HPE BL460c Gen8 server blade form factor, Administrators can add two physically separated servers instead of just one full-width blade server—and still have the same number of processors. This is an excellent choice for data center applications with its well-balanced performance, scalability, and expandability features. This server blade is designed for the HPE BladeSystem c3000 and c7000 enclosures, which offer a shared infrastructure design and supports backwards and forward compatibility across multiple generations of blades. Cooling, power, and management are handled at the chassis level resulting in a lower cost per server with reduced cabling, power, and airflow requirements in comparison to individual rack mounted servers. With a blade enclosure, the management and network interconnects can pool and share resources across multiple enclosures and can split dual and quad port network connections between interconnects for increased throughput and redundancy.

Performance
Intel’s C600 series chipset supports a maximum of two processors, either two Xeon E5-2600 or two Xeon E5-2600 v2 processor families. V2 processors support 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, or 12 cores each with speeds of up to 3.5GHz and offer a 24% increase in performance over the previous generation processors.
Memory
There are sixteen total memory slots available in a two-processor configuration with each processor controlling eight memory slots. Registered (RDIMM), load reduced (LRDIMM) or unbuffered ECC (UDIMM) memory modules are supported. The maximum capacity of 512GB is supported using sixteen 32GB load reduced DIMM modules. HPE SmartMemory is recommended and offers improved functionality.
Storage
A total of two hot-plug SFF SAS, SATA or SSD drives can be installed on the system. The HPE Smart Array P220i storage controller comes with a 512 MB FBWC.
Expansion
Two PCIe 3.0 expansion slots support 1 x 16 type A or type B, and supports dual and quad-port mezzanine cards with ports split between the interconnect modules. The second expansion slot is only active with a second processor installed.
Management
On system management is handled by HPE’s Integrated Lights Out (iLO 4) and consolidated by the chassis management module. For data center applications, HPE’s OneView can help administrators manage multiple servers and multiple enclosures using different operating systems and 3rd-party applications. For security there is also an optional trusted platform module.
Summary
The HPE ProLiant BL460c Gen8 server blade is supported on the HPE c3000 and c7000 blade enclosures. The c3000 supports up to eight half-height server blades and up to four expansion blades. The c7000 supports up to 16 half-height, or eight full-height server blades, or a mix of the two.
