Description
The 1u form factor of the HPE DL120 Gen9 server is ideal for SMBs. It offers a high-density solution for virtualization and is also an excellent candidate for a test server for enterprise businesses. The DL120 G9 supports two configurations; one with four LFF drives and another supporting up to eight SFF drives.
Performance
Intel’s C610 chipset supports a single Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3, E5-2600 v4, E5-1600 v3, or E5-1600 v4 processor supporting a modest 4 cores to 22 cores. With more cores you can create more virtual machines (VM). Your choice of both processor and memory will determine the data transfer speed, either 1866MT/s, 2133 MT/s, or 2400 MT/s. Powering the system is either a 550W fixed power supply or 900W redundant power supply. The hot-swappable 900W redundant PSUs require the addition of a power backplane configured to support power redundancy.
Memory
A maximum of 256GB of memory is supported in eight DIMM slots on the HPE DL120 Gen9, with four channels per processor and two DIMM slots per channel. Choose from Registered (RDIMM) or Load Reduced (LRDIMM) modules to outfit your system. When matched with an appropriate processor LRDIMM modules will operate at maximum of 2400MHz and RDIMM modules at 2133MHZ. HPE SmartMemory is recommended to get the most performance out of the memory modules and also enables enhanced functionality.
Storage
The DL120 Gen9 server supports either eight 2.5-inch drives in an eight-bay chassis or four 3.5-inch drives in a four-bay chassis. Using four recently released 10TB 3.5-inch drives the system will support up to 40TB of storage! 2.5-inch drives will support up to 31TB of storage, which is quite impressive too. Drive formats include hot-swap SAS/SATA SSDs and HDDs. Both chassis configurations will support an optional DVD-ROM DVD-RW storage device. Also, standard on the system is either an HPE Dynamic Smart Array B140i controller or an H240 Smart Host Bus Adapter, both of which support RAID of 0, 1, 1+0, and 5. Several other controllers are supported. The system also supports optional dual or single M.2 SSDs with up to 120GB of storage.
Expansion
One low profile PCIe slot is standard on the DL120 Gen9, but up to three PCIe slots are supported using optional risers that will increase that number to three PCIe 3.0 slots. The optional risers include a Flexible LOM riser, a full-height half-length PCIe riser, and a GPU enablement riser. The Nvidia Quadro K2200 Graphics Accelerator is supported on the system using the GPU enablement riser but you will need to install the 900W PSU. The system comes standard with a dual port NIC but Administrators can also choose from 1GbE or 10GbE or QDR/FDR Infiniband Networking options. Integrated Matrox G200eH2 video is standard on the system and supports resolutions up to 1920 x 1200.
Management
HPE offers several different management tools to provide better server maintenance and reduce critical downtime. HPE’s OneView provides converged infrastructure management enhancing automation across servers, storage, and networking. HPEs Integrated Lights Out (iLO) comes standard on this system. iLO gives administrators access to server health information and the ability to monitor and set server power and thermal controls on-site or remotely. Optional enterprise licenses can be purchased giving administrators even more management tools. An iLO Essentials license grants SMBs server set up via virtual media, full remote management access through the Integrated Remote Console, and faster time to resolution with proactive email notifications. The iLO Advanced license, for Enterprise businesses, grants premium remote functionality such as graphic remote console with multi-user collaboration, video record/playback, and many more advanced features. iLO makes managing your server easier than ever before. UEFI, the industry standard Unified Extensible Firmware Interface, helps configure and securely boot your servers. Smart Update helps to ensure your system is always running the latest drivers, reducing downtime.
Summary
The HPE DL120 Gen9 is a very capable server that supports a variety of common business applications and light virtualization. It’s Docker-ready if you plan on exploring the potential of container-based applications which offer greater density than virtualization. The DL120 also supports Windows Server 2016, a 25Gb network option, and 10GB FlexFabric. The single socket also helps reduce licensing costs for virtualization workloads.
