Description
The HPE ProLiant DL180 Gen6 server offers rack server performance while maintaining the low cost of a tower server. With two processors installed, this system provides a maximum internal storage of 42TB and a max memory footprint of 192GB. Serviceability and server setup is simplified with the addition of “tool-less” rail kits and an internal system design that allows for easy access to components. HPE’s LO100 management module features simplify server setup and deployment.
Performance
Powered by Intel’s 5520 chipset, the HPE DL180 Gen6 supports dual CPU configurations with six or quad core Xeon processors from the 5500/5600 series. With the exception of Intel’s Xeon E5606 and E5603 processor models, this system supports Intel’s Hyper-Threading technology to improve parallelization of computations for a faster transaction time.
Memory
In a single processor configuration this system supports up to six DIMM slots, and 12 DIMM slots with a second processor installed. Both unbuffered (UDIMM) and registered (RDIMM) memory modules can be installed in this system, but mixing different memory types is not supported. With all 12 DIMM slots filled with 16GB registered memory modules, this rack server can provide up to 192GB of memory. If unbuffered memory modules are preferred, 12 x 4GB memory modules will provide a maximum memory capacity of 48GB.
Storage
This system can support up to 14 large form factor (LFF) drives, or 25 small form factor (SFF) drives. A 14 LFF system places two hard drives at the back of the chassis, but all other configurations keep the drives located in the front. A fully loaded LFF configuration with 3TB SATA hot plug drives will provide an impressive maximum internal storage capacity of 42TB. If desired, an optical drive bay can be added to the front of the system in the 8 LFF model, or a rear drive tray can be added to accommodate an optical drive in other configurations.
Expansion
Four PCIe expansion slots are available on the HPE DL180 Gen6, all of which can accept universal keyed PCI cards. The fourth expansion slot can support PCI-X technology as well, but PCI legacy cards are not supported on this system. Adding a PCI riser to the server will give administrators the ability to replace two x8 slots with one x16 slot for increased bandwidth. A total of five USB ports are available, with one internal port and the remaining four ports divided evenly between the front and the back of the chassis.
Management
HPE’s LO100 management software provides basic remote management features and allows for the system to be accessed, out-of-band, without an operating system installed. Advanced licenses are available and provide Administrators with more tools like Virtual KVM which uses a virtual desktop to provide full control over the server’s KVM components.
Summary
The HPE ProLiant DL180 Gen6 server delivers the performance benefits of a dual and quad-core architecture along with a 48GB memory footprint, and up to 42TB of internal storage. Connectivity options are flexible with four PCIe slots and five USB ports throughout the system. Remote management features are provided through HPE’s LO100 management software and sever setup has been simplified with the addition of an Easy Setup CD.
