Description
The HPE DL320e Gen8 v2 is a small rack-optimized server aimed towards small businesses for its space-saving and low-cost advantages. The system’s enhanced configuration flexibility allows users to cut the cost even further with low-cost processor options. Tool-less access to a majority of the components and the implementation of flat-cabling throughout the server contribute for easy maintenance and upgrade. HPE introduced a myriad of new features with their ProLiant Gen8 servers, including SmartMemory modules, SmartDrive carriers, and Smart Socket CPU guides.
Performance
Although the system itself may be small, there’s no compromise on performance with Intel’s Xeon E3-1200 v3 series quad-core processors providing speeds up to 3.6GHz. For a lower-cost alternative, administrators can choose Pentium and Core-i series processors. Power consumption is lower than its Gen7 counterpart and a Common Slot 48V DC power supply is available with the 4 SFF configuration.
Memory
The ProLiant DL320e Gen8 v2 can support up to four DDR3 SmartMemory modules for a maximum memory capacity of 32GB. HPE’s SmartMemory is tested and qualified by HPE to deliver the highest level of bandwidth, prevent data loss, increases performance by 16.6%, and reduces power consumption by up to 20%. When used with the system’s Insight Manager, the SMART capable firmware alerts users of potential DIMM failure in advance, so it can be replaced before the module fails.
Storage
The server can support up to four SAS or SATA small form factor (SFF) hard drives for a maximum internal storage capacity of 8TB. If desired, the platform can be configured to support two large form factor (LFF) hard drive bays. With either configuration, administrators can add an optional optical drive bay to support a DVD-RW drive. HPE’s SmartDrive disk carriers help reduce the potential of human error and allow administrators to save time interpreting drive operation with easy-to-read icon-based LED statuses. SmartDrive carriers can also detect if the installed drives are authentic HPE qualified components.
Expansion
The DL320e Gen8 v2 server can support up to two PCIe Gen3 I/O slots. The first slot supports a half-length, full-height card with the second expansion slot supporting a low-profile card.
Management
Administrators no longer need to use SmartStart CDs or Smart Update Firmware DVDs to configure the server. HPE’s iLO Management Engine with Intelligent Provisioning takes care of the job quickly and efficiently. Agentless Management delivers a built-in server alerting capability and server health monitoring as soon as the power and Ethernet cables are connected. HPE’s Insight Control, an optional management tool, automates asset tracking and allows administrators to optimize their IT infrastructure through a single management console. Management tools are easy to use and intuitive further reducing the stress of network administration.
Summary
The HPE ProLiant DL320e Gen8 v2 rack server saves rack space without settling on performance. Serviceability of Gen8 servers has been simplified with the introduction of tool-less access to components, “Snap and Go” rail kits, and HPE’s new Smart Socket guide which gives a more precise approach to processor installation. Flat cabling throughput the system further simplifies serviceability and allows for ample airflow throughout the system to reduce cooling costs. This server provides all of the features you would expect in a higher-end server but without the additional cost.
