Description
The HPE ProLiant DL385 Gen7 Server features dual processors and is ideal for memory-intensive applications such as virtualization projects, and other business needs. Administrators can put their data security concerns to rest with data encryption provided through HPE’s Trusted Platform Module (TPM). HPE’s Insight Control management provide Administrators with tools simplifying server management and increasing productivity.
Performance
This system can support up to two AMD Opteron 6100 or 6200 series processors. Administrators looking for a larger amount of cache should opt for the 6200 series of processors which offers 16 MB L3 cache compared to the 12 MB L3 cache supported with AMD’s 6100 series processors. Opteron 6200 series also provides a larger variety of core options than the 6100 series processors. Hot-plug redundant power supplies and hot plug redundant fans increase server uptime.
Memory
This server can support 24 DDR3 registered (RDIMM) or unbuffered (UDIMM) memory modules. With all 24 slots filled, UDIMM memory modules can provide a memory capacity of 64GB. For memory intensive applications, administrators can configure the system with RDIMM memory modules to provide a maximum memory capacity of 512GB. Administrators can turn off visible processor software cores with AMD’s Core Select when memory performance is more important than core count.
Storage
Depending on the configuration desired, this server can support 8 SFF, 16 SFF, or 6 LFF SAS/SATA hot plug drive bays. With the 8 SFF configuration, an optional slimline optical drive can be included with the HPE DL385 Gen7 but this upgrade is not available with other drive configurations. A maximum internal storage of 24TB is provided when using six 4TB drives. If desired, the embedded smart array controller allows administrators to add battery-backed write cache or flash-backed write cache to the system.
Expansion
This system provides a total of six PCI expansion slots, but only three slots are supported in a single-processor configuration. Eight different riser options (four primary and four secondary) are available to choose from depending on the technology, bus width, and form factor needed.
Management
Server downtime is reduced with HPE’s Smart Update Manager (HP SUM) which provides a simplified user interface to guide users through server analyses and updates. The systems Insight Control proactively monitors server performance and health and allows administrators to manage both virtual and physical IT through a single console. Dynamic Power Capping technologies optimize your power infrastructure, and improve server capacity by up to three times. To further increase productivity, hardware errors can be easily isolated with the DL385 Gen7’s front-accessible Systems Insight Display.
Summary
The HPE ProLiant DL385 Gen7 server provides an impressive amount of memory capacity with a sufficient internal storage to provide the perfect solution for a diverse range of applications. NIC features, along with the server’s integrated VMware and XenServer virtualization technology, allow for virtual machines to easily be deployed. A variety of different expansion riser options provide a great deal of I/O flexibility. The system’s energy efficiency, upgradability, and configuration flexibility enable it to meet the demands of small business as well as enterprise environments.
