Description
The HPE ProLiant DL580 Gen7 server is a quad-processor platform with 64 DIMM slots, 11 expansion slots, and 8 SFF drive bays, ideal for large databases applications that require scale-up computing processing, large memory, and I/O intensive applications. A total of six USB 2.0 ports can be found on the system with two inside the chassis and the remaining four evenly divided between the front and the back of the system. The system’s enhanced Reliability, Availability, and Serviceability (RAS) features remove performance bottlenecks and extend system uptime.
Performance
Built for complex IT environments, this system supports up to four Intel Xeon E7-4800, E7-8800 or X7500 series processors to provide up to 30MB L3 cache and processor speeds up to 2.6MHz. E7 processors support Enhanced Double Device Data Correction, Intel’s advanced memory correction technology that protects the system from memory chip failure.
Memory
This system supports 64 DDR3 registered (RDIMM) memory modules shared between four multi-core processors. With four processors, Xeon X7500 series processors will provide a maximum memory capacity of 1TB, but using Intel’s E7 processors it will support up 2TB using 32GB memory modules. RAS (Reliability, Availability, and Serviceability) features like HPE’s Memory Quarantine helps to ensure maximum uptime by notifies administrators when there are processor or memory errors.
Storage
Up to 8 SFF SAS drive bays are supported on the HPE DL580 Gen7, and deliver a maximum internal storage capacity of 9.6TB. If desired, an optional slimline optical drive can be added to the configuration. An internal SSD drive slot is available for greater storage capacity. HPE’s Smart Array controllers support Flash Backed Write Cache which increases cache data retention capabilities from two days of existing Battery-Backed Write Cache (BBWC) to infinite data retention.
Expansion
This system offers great expansion potential with support for eleven PCI expansion slots with the addition of an I/O expander—all full length/full height. Without the expander, five expansion slots are supported on the main I/O board. Administrators can choose between two I/O expanders, one of which offers support for legacy PCI-X technology whereas the other expander features PCIe Gen2 technology.
Management
HPE’s Service Pack for ProLiant (SPP) and Smart Update Manager (HP SUM) ensure maximum uptime and better operating stability. Server setup has been simplified from previous ProLiant generations with HPE’s Integrated Lights Out (iLO) technology, which also provides remote administration capabilities and power/thermal control that can be accessed from any location through a standard web browser. Automated monitoring tools provided through Proactive Insight prevent hardware problems before they cause problems, maximizing server uptime.
Summary
The HPE ProLiant DL580 Gen7 server has great expansion potential with support for a total of eleven PCI slots and an impressive 64 DIMM slots for high-performance workloads. Intel’s E7 processors provide a wide range of RAS features to reduce server downtime and improve performance. The chassis design includes a drawer to hold all four processors and memory that can be easily accessed with the press of a button for hassle-free upgrades and repairs. Remote management features are eight times faster with HPE’s iLO 3.0 management module, and Smart Array storage controllers provide support for Flash-Backed Write Cache improving data retention.
