Description
The HPE ProLiant MicroServer Gen10 is ideal for small offices that are looking for efficiency and effortless access to data. This ultra-micro server is 9.25 x 9.06 x 10 inches, and supports a maximum memory capacity of 32 GB. It utilizes an AMD accelerated processing unit with graphics cores embedded to improve graphic software performance without installing an additional PCI-e graphics adapter. The MicroServer Gen 10 also supports one PCI-e 3.0 x8 and one PCI-e 3.0 x4, both with open-ended connectors that support up to x16.
Performance
Inside the chassis you’ll find the new AMD X3000 series Opteron Accelerated Processing Unit (APU) (X3216, X3418, and X3421) as well as DDR4 ECC UDIMM memory—all models start with 8GB and can be upgraded to support up to 32GB. The Opteron processor has graphics cores embedded in the architecture for improved graphic performance without the need for a PCIe graphics adapter but that option is available. You will find the processor speeds and core count for each model below:
Entry Model X3216—1.6-3.0GHz/2-core/1MB/12-15W
Performance Model X3418— 1.8-3.2GHz/4-core/2MB/12-35W
Solution Model X3421— 2.1-3.4GHz/4-core/2MB/12-35W
Memory
This easy-to-use system has been upgraded to support 2x DDR4 2400 UDIMM memory modules with a maximum capacity of 32 GB memory, compared to the Gen 8 version featuring 2x memory module slots outfitted with slower 2 DDR3 1333/1600 UDIMM modules and a maximum capacity of 16 GB. All models can be upgraded from the standard 8 GB to 32 GB. However, it is important to note that X3421 and X3418 processors support memory speeds of up to 2400 MT/s, while the X3216 processor only supports up to 1600 MT/s. Only DDR4 memory modules are supported. HPE memory modules from previous generation servers are not compatible with the HPE ProLiant MicroServer Gen10.
Storage
The HPE MicroServer Gen10 can support up to four 3.5-inch 4TB SATA drives, for a total of 16TB of storage. They support cold plug LFF SATA or will support 2.5-inch drives using an LFF to SFF SATA converter option. A Marvell 88SE9230 PCIe to SATA 6Gb/s is the embedded storage controller, and supports RAID of 0, 1, and 10 with no FBWC support. HPE Smart Array E208i-p SR Gen10 is the essential RAID controller, which supports RAID 0, 1, 5, and 10 with no FBWC support. Hot-plug hard drives are not supported. A SATA DVD RW drive is optional but the media bay can also be used to support a single SATA SSD which can be used to support the OS or for use as additional storage.
Expansion
There is one PCIe 3.0 x8 slot and one PCIe 3.0 x4 slot. Both are low-profile and open-ended to support up to x16 PCIe card form factors. The longer slot is certified for HPE’s Smart Array SAS RAID cards, making it easier to convert to SAS support. The micro tower also supports extra graphics workload by increasing the capability for up to five 4K resolution displays with the AMD Radeon Pro WX 2100 Graphics Card.
Management
Along with the usual operating systems including Microsoft Windows Server 2012 and 2016 and Linux RedHat, the MicroServer Gen10 can also be configured with ClearOS Software from HPE. Clear OS is an operating system with an intuitive web-based GUI and application marketplace (Should marketplace be interface???) that can be factory pre-loaded, making it ready to use right out of the box.
Summary
The HPE ProLiant MicroServer Gen10’s extra power, larger memory capacity and versatile storage options make it an ideal choice for businesses seeking their first server or for the home entertainment enthusiast. It offers many integrated options in an easy to manage mico-form factor.
