Description
Up to ten ProLiant XL230A blades, or server trays, fit vertically in the 5U Apollo 6000 chassis. The XL230A blade comes with either hot plug or non-hot plug hard drives. Power, cooling, networking, and management are handled at the chassis level to reduce cost of ownership. The Apollo 6000 chassis has ten I/O modules that support network connections speeds of 1GbE and 10 GbE for increased throughput.
Performance
The ProLiant XL230A features Intel’s C610 chipset and supports a total of two processors. Administrators can choose from either Intel’s Xeon E5-2600 v3 or E5-2600 v4 product lines, which have up to 22 cores and 44 virtual threads. Depending on your choice of processor, memory, and configuration, the memory will run at 1600Mhz, 1866MHz, 2133MHz, or a maximum of 2400MHz. Most compatible processors support Intel Turbo Boost Technology.
Memory
There are 16 memory slots total, with each processor supporting eight memory modules. In a two processor configuration, with all memory slots loaded with 128GB modules, the system will support a maximum of 2TB of memory. Only DDR4 registered (RDIMM) or load-reduced (LRDIMM) memory modules are supported, DDR3 memory modules are not compatible with the XL230A Gen9.
Storage
There is room to house four small form factor SAS or SATA SSDs or HDDs. Maximum internal storage is listed at 15.36TB using SFF SAS HDDs. Storage controllers start with the integrated B140i controller but there are quite a few more options to choose from supporting local storage plus direct attached storage (DAS) and network attached storage (NAS) options. The H240 controller is required if you plan on installing SAS drives. Additional HD/RAID controllers can only be mounted using the Apollo 6000 PCIe/FlexibleLOM Riser kit. Also supported is an internal Micro SD slot.
Expansion
I/O modules hosted in the chassis are specific to each server tray and install in the rear of the Apollo enclosure. The Apollo 6000 chassis supports ten server trays in front and ten I/O modules in back with each server tray targeted at a specific I/O module. The XL230A supports the following I/O module riser options:
- Dual FlexibleLOM – supports two Flexible LOM options
- PCIe/FlexibleLOM – supports one low profile PCIe board and one FlexibleLOM
- HPE Ethernet dual 1Gb 1-port i364 adapter
Network connection speeds include 1GbE, 10GbE, InfiniBand options, and FlexibleLOM. Graphics are provided by an integrated Matrox G200, which is standard equipment and also supports HPE iLO 4 On System Management Memory.
Management
Embedded management is provided by iLO 4.0 and a host of other management options from HPE’s Gen9 server line.
Summary
The XL230A is a great general purpose blade server that can excel in a number of different applications.
